Non-Aligned Movement Summit kicks off in Belgrade

Belgrade, IRNA – The opening ceremony of the Non-Aligned Movement Summit in its 60th anniversary of establishment was held on Monday in the Serbian capital, Belgrade, and was attended by Deputy Foreign Minister the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Economic Diplomacy Mehdi Safari headed a delegation to Belgrade on Monday to attend summit.

Safari is going to have meetings with Serbian officials and also officials from attending countries on the sidelines of the summit.

Officials from over 100 member and observing states of the movement have shown up in the summit which is held today and tomorrow.

Serbian Foreign Minister Nikola Selaković said that the country’s strategic goal was to stay in the European Union, but it wouldn’t forget its friends in the Non-Aligned Movement.

Also, Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vučić said that it was time to reconsider the ideas of political independence and joint action of free countries.

The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) is a forum of 120 developing world states that are not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. After the United Nations, it is the largest grouping of states worldwide.

Former Yugoslavia whose main successor is today Serbia played a significant role in establishing the movement and the first summit of the movement was held in Belgrade, then capital of Yugoslavia.
